Is a Home Battery Worth It?

A battery is the add-on almost every solar installer will offer, and it’s not automatically the right call. It depends more on your daily routine and tariff than on the size of your system.

What a battery actually changes

Without a battery, any solar you generate but don’t use straight away gets exported to the grid, typically at a fraction of what you’d pay to buy it back later. A battery lets you store that surplus and use it in the evening instead, so you rely less on grid electricity when the sun isn’t out.

When it pays off

  • You’re out during the day. If most of your household’s electricity use happens in the evening, a battery captures generation that would otherwise be exported cheaply.
  • You’re on, or willing to switch to, a time-of-use tariff. Charging overnight on a cheap rate and using stored power during the day or evening peak can improve payback further, even independent of solar.
  • You want backup during outages. Some battery systems can power essential circuits if the grid goes down, a benefit that doesn’t show up in a payback calculation but matters to some households.

When it doesn’t

If you’re mostly home and using electricity during daylight hours already, you’re already capturing most of the value a battery would add, and it becomes an expensive way to solve a problem you don’t really have. Without solar or an active tariff strategy, batteries rarely make financial sense on their own.

Worth knowing: midday export is worth less than it used to be. Weighing the cost

Installed battery systems vary widely in cost depending on capacity, brand and whether you’re pairing with existing solar, and combined solar-plus-battery annual savings run higher than solar alone, though not proportionally so. Battery storage also qualifies for 0% VAT, whether it’s standalone or added to an existing solar system, and the May 2026 Budget extended that relief to run until 31 March 2027, in line with solar.

Bottom line

Treat a battery as an optimisation on top of solar, not a must-have. If your installer quotes it by default, it’s worth asking them to model your payback with and without it based on your actual usage pattern, not just a generic estimate.
