Plug-in solar, sometimes called balcony solar, is a small panel and inverter that connects straight into a normal wall socket, no rewiring, no scaffolding, no installer. It’s been common in Germany for years. In the UK it’s been in a legal grey area, because the standard BS 1363 plug and socket system was never designed to carry power the other way. From 27 August 2026, that changes.

What actually changes on 27 August 2026

The government amended the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994, alongside the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002, in a statutory instrument made on 16 July 2026 and laid before Parliament the following day. It comes into force on 27 August 2026, and it creates a legal definition of a “plug-in microgenerator”: a device that generates electricity from sunlight only, connects via a standard plug, and meets a new Interim Product Specification. Before that date, connecting any solar device to a normal socket isn’t compliant, whatever the packaging claims. The only compliant route until then is a hardwired system on its own breaker, fitted by a registered electrician.

What a compliant kit can and can’t do

  • Capped at 800W. The regulation sets a maximum apparent power of 800VA and limits the current fed into your circuit to 3.5A, which in practice means an inverter rated at up to 800W AC.
  • Sunlight only, no battery. A plug-in microgenerator can’t import power to charge a battery for later use. It generates while the sun’s out and stops when it isn’t; there’s no storage built into the legal definition.
  • No professional installation or planning permission required, provided the kit itself meets the Interim Product Specification and uses an approved plug. That’s the whole point of the change: it’s designed to be genuinely DIY.

You still have to tell your network operator

Removing the installer doesn’t remove the paperwork entirely. Any generator connecting to the grid, plug-in solar included, falls under Engineering Recommendation G98, and you’re required to notify your local electricity distributor within 28 days of installing it. It’s a formality rather than an approval process, you install first and notify after, and it just needs your address, the inverter’s make, model and output. It’s free and doesn’t require a site visit.

Where it falls short of a full rooftop system

Plug-in solar sits in a different category from a full installation, with a lower ceiling built into the rules themselves. It has no route to MCS certification, which is what the Smart Export Guarantee (see our SEG explainer) requires, so any surplus you generate but don’t use gets exported for nothing. An 800W kit is also a fraction of a typical rooftop array, which usually runs into several kilowatts, so it makes a real but modest dent in a bill rather than replacing a meaningful share of it. And because it can’t charge a battery, it can’t shift what you generate during the day into the evening, when most households actually use the most power.

Safety still matters

Industry bodies flagged real concerns during the consultation, particularly around residual current devices (RCDs) and the risk of overheating if a unit is run through an extension lead or a multi-socket adaptor rather than a dedicated wall socket. The same basic rules that apply to any high-draw device apply here: use the socket the manufacturer specifies, don’t daisy-chain it through an extension lead, and make sure the circuit has RCD protection. And buying an older, non-compliant kit that was sold before legalisation doesn’t retroactively make it legal to use, only products that meet the Interim Product Specification and carry the required plug approval qualify.

Who it actually suits

Plug-in solar is aimed squarely at people a full installation doesn’t reach: renters, leaseholders, and flats without roof access or the right to alter one. A balcony rail or garden mount is a much lower bar than a full roof job, but it’s still worth checking your tenancy agreement or lease before fixing anything to the building, even though the regulations themselves don’t require planning permission.
